Versions of the National Criticism: Two Readings of Arte nuevo at the End of the XIX Century

Abstract

At the end of the nineteenth century, two antagonistic factions disputed the hegemony of the Spanish intellectual field: the orthodox Catholic traditionalism and the Krausist liberalism. In such a significant context, to look for evidences of the theoretical confrontation between Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo and Manuel de la Revilla acquires real importance when trying to understand the origin of opposing viewpoints between the Hispanic critics. Besides, the readings made by Menéndez y Pelayo and Alcántara García on Lope de Vega’s Arte nuevo helps to illustrate the subject by means of an example with precise resonances.

Mariano Saba, UBA / Conicet

Profesor y Licenciado en Letras por la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Actualmente se desempeña como Ayudante de Primera en la cátedra de Literatura Española II de la Facultad de de Filosofía y Letras de la misma universidad. Forma parte del proyecto UBACyT Historiografías literarias decimonónicas. Los intelectuales y las literaturas nacionales: Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo y Gastón Paris, dirigido por la Dra. Florencia Calvo, y se encuentra realizando el doctorado en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, becado por el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) y radicado en el Instituto de Filología y Literaturas Hispánicas “Dr. Amado Alonso”. Su tema de tesis indaga la influencia de la obra de Menéndez Pelayo en la obra ensayística y dramática de Miguel de Unamuno.
