The research on trachoma and international networks in Argentina (end of XIX Century to 1930’s)

Abstract

We analyze the connections between scientists and physicians in relation to the

development and therapeutics of trachoma in Argentina, contagious eye infection,

considered a dangerous social disease worldwide. This question is especially linked to

the contexts of knowledge construction at the international level and to the colonial

domination of the European powers. These contacts have been studied since the

late nineteenth century, when the disease began to be detected in Argentina until

the 1930s, when the participation of Argentine doctors in different ophthalmological

associations related to trachoma would indicate a local concern to join international

circles. We review manuals and journals published in Argentina and national and

international congress proceedings, as well as The British Journal of Ophthalmology and

the Revue Internationale du Trachome.
