Abstract

David Vilaseca’s autobiographical work, published in 2017 and adapted for the stage in 2022, problematizes the binary divisions between truth and fiction, success and failure, as well as some iterations within de dynamics between shame and pride. Through the analysis of some pertinent moments in Vilaseca’s work, this essay addresses several prevalent debates within Queer Studies in the last years, such as the explorations of the tensions around the notion of “shame” or the critical evaluation of the antisocial turn as well as the utopian vision within non-normative epistemologies. Furthermore, these pages aim to serve as a tribute of David Vilaseca, pioneer figure in the introduction of Queer Theories in Iberian (and Catalan) studies, and author of a monumental literary work that moves amidst the crevices of autobiography and fiction.

Author Biography

Isaias Fanlo, Universidad de Cambridge

Doctor por la Universidad de Chicago y profesor de culturas ibéricas modernas y contemporáneas en la Universidad de Cambridge. Su investigación se centra en la intersección entre las culturas ibéricas, las artes escénicas y las teorías queer. Es autor de El llibre rosa (Columna, 2004). En la actualidad está escribiendo una monografía titulada Lo errático y lo obsceno. Paralelamente a su trayectoria académica, ha desarrollado una carrera como gestor cultural en el sector de las artes escénicas. Ha trabajado como editor, dramaturgista y creador de contenidos en el Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, ha sido miembro del consejo artístico del Teatre Lliure de Barcelona y también ha asesorado proyectos para otros teatros de Barcelona y para el Goodman Theatre de Chicago. Es miembro fundador del festival de artes escénicas en las azoteas de Barcelona Terrats en Cultura, que forma parte de la European Creative Rooftop Network.
