Guidelines for contributors in Praxis Educativa
Praxis Educativa is a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal published by the Institute of Education Sciences for Interdisciplinary Research (ICEII), Faculty of Human Sciences, National University of La Pampa. The journal promotes the dissemination of interdisciplinary research on educational issues and serves as a forum for researchers, teachers, and students. Manuscripts submitted to Praxis Educativa must comply with the following Guidelines for Authors.
Praxis Educativa accepts original and unpublished manuscripts written in Spanish throughout the year. The journal operates under a continuous submission model, and manuscripts may be submitted at any time. Submitted manuscripts must not be under consideration by another journal or publisher. Manuscripts will not be returned after submission. The number of articles published in each issue depends on the journal's editorial workflow.
-
The journal accepts the following types of contributions:
-
Original research articles, review articles, essays, and case studies, subject to external double-anonymous peer review. Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere. The maximum length is 10,000 words, including notes and references.
-
Dossiers, consisting of a collection of articles addressing a common topic related to the journal's aims and scope. A dossier must include: (a) a title, (b) an introductory presentation explaining the relevance of the topic, and (c) four research articles. All contributions must comply with the journal's submission requirements and undergo the same double-anonymous peer review process as regular articles.
-
Interviews, which must be original and unpublished. Interviews are subject to external double-anonymous peer review and should not exceed 5,000 words, including notes and references.
-
Book reviews of works published within the previous three years. Reviews are evaluated by the Editorial Committee and should not exceed 3,000 words. They should provide a critical and analytical discussion of the book's contribution to the field rather than a summary of its contents. Reviews must begin with the complete bibliographic information of the book (title, author(s), publisher, place of publication, year, and number of pages). The reviewer's name and institutional affiliation should appear at the end of the text. Footnotes, references, and bibliographies should be avoided whenever possible. Authors are requested to include a high-quality image of the book cover in JPG or TIFF format.
2. Manuscripts must be submitted exclusively through the journal's Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform: http://cerac.unlpam.edu.ar/index.php/praxis. They will be recorded in http://cerac.unlpam.edu.ar/index.php/praxis/user/register. All correspondence concerning submissions should be addressed to: revistapraxiseducativaiceii@gmail.com
3. All manuscripts submitted to Praxis Educativa are screened for originality using Similarity Check, a service provided by Crossref. Similarity Check employs iThenticate software to identify textual similarities between submitted manuscripts and previously published material.
Similarity reports are used exclusively as a support tool in the editorial evaluation process. Editorial decisions are based on the reviewers' and editors' academic judgment, taking into account the nature and extent of any identified similarities and following the journal's publication ethics policies.
4. Before uploading a manuscript and any supplementary files, authors must complete the submission process in the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform by confirming the following declarations:
-
Originality. I declare that the submitted manuscript is my original work, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. I accept full responsibility for its content. Publication in Praxis Educativa does not imply endorsement by the journal of the views expressed in the manuscript.
-
Copyright. If the manuscript is accepted for publication, I grant Praxis Educativa and the National University of La Pampa (UNLPam) the non-exclusive right of first publication. Authors retain the copyright and publication rights to their work in accordance with the journal's copyright and licensing policy.
-
Use of third-party materials. I declare that all quotations, data, figures, tables, images, and other materials reproduced from previously published sources have been properly cited and included in the reference list. Where required, I have obtained the necessary permissions from the relevant archive, repository, institution, or copyright holder to reproduce such materials.
-
Creative Commons License. I acknowledge that, since September 2018, all articles published in Praxis Educativa have been distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) license. This license permits copying, sharing, adaptation, and redistribution of the work for non-commercial purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given to the original author(s), the original publication in Praxis Educativa is acknowledged, and any derivative works are distributed under the same license.
-
Conflict of Interest. I declare that I have no actual or potential conflicts of interest that could influence the research, interpretation, or publication of the submitted manuscript.
-
Publication Fees. I acknowledge that Praxis Educativa does not charge any fees at any stage of the publication process, including submission, peer review, copyediting, or publication (Article Processing Charges – APCs). I also understand that authors do not receive financial compensation for publication.
-
Publication Ethics. I declare that I have read and agree to comply with the journal's editorial policies, ethical standards, and submission guidelines, available in the Guidelines for Authors.
-
Blind Peer Review and ORCID. I confirm that the submitted manuscript has been prepared in accordance with the journal's double-anonymous peer review requirements and contains no identifying information that could compromise reviewer anonymity. I also confirm that I have registered for an ORCID iD. If I do not yet have one, I agree to create an ORCID record during the submission process and to provide my complete ORCID URL (e.g., https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1825-0097).
5. During the submission process, authors must complete the metadata fields in the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform by providing the following information:
-
Author information: institutional affiliation, field of expertise, a brief biographical note (maximum 100 words), postal address, email address, country, and ORCID iD for each author.
-
Title: the title of the manuscript in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.
-
Abstracts: three abstracts (Spanish, Portuguese, and English), each with a maximum length of 150 words, formatted in Times New Roman, 10-point font, single-spaced.
-
Keywords: five (5) keywords in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.
Abstracts and keywords are essential for the indexing, retrieval, and dissemination of scholarly publications. Authors are therefore encouraged to prepare them carefully, using clear, precise, and standardized terminology to facilitate information retrieval in bibliographic databases.
Abstracts should follow the recommendations of UNE 50-103-1990 (Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification – AENOR) for the preparation of informative abstracts.
Keywords should accurately reflect the main characteristics of the manuscript, including, where appropriate, the corpus or object of study, the disciplinary field, the methodological approach, the historical period, and the geographical context. Authors are encouraged to select keywords from recognized controlled vocabularies or specialized thesauri, such as the UNESCO Thesaurus, HASSET (Humanities and Social Science Electronic Thesaurus), or the vocabularies available through the CAICYT Semantic Server.
6. Ensuring Blind Peer Review
To ensure the integrity of the double-anonymous peer review process, authors must prepare their manuscripts as follows:
a) Remove all identifying information
Authors must remove all information that could reveal their identity from the manuscript, including the text, acknowledgements, references to previous work, and any documentary citations that may identify the author(s).
When citing their own previously published work, authors should replace their name(s) with the word "Author" (or "Authors", where appropriate) while retaining the year of publication. In addition, the following statement should be inserted in parentheses, in capital letters, and highlighted in gray:
(THIS INFORMATION HAS BEEN REMOVED TO PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF THE DOUBLE-ANONYMOUS PEER REVIEW PROCESS.)
b) Remove identifying information from the file properties
Authors must also ensure that all personal information has been removed from the document properties before submission.
In Microsoft Word, this can be done by selecting:
File → Save As → Tools → Security Options → Remove personal information from file properties on save → Save.
7. Upon submission, all manuscripts undergo an initial editorial screening conducted by the Editor and the Editorial Committee. Invited contributions may be subject to a different editorial process.
The evaluation process consists of the following stages:
a) Initial editorial review
The Editor and the Editorial Committee assess whether the manuscript falls within the journal's scope, complies with the Guidelines for Authors, and meets the journal's basic editorial and scientific standards. Manuscripts that do not satisfy these requirements may be returned to the authors for revision or declined before peer review.
b) External peer review
Manuscripts that pass the initial screening are evaluated through a double-anonymous peer review process by two independent reviewers with recognized expertise in the relevant field. Reviewers are external to the journal and the Editorial Committee.
Reviewers evaluate the manuscript according to its scientific quality, originality, contribution to the field, methodological rigor, coherence between objectives, theoretical framework, data, analysis, and conclusions, as well as its overall organization, clarity, and compliance with the journal's editorial guidelines.
c) Review outcomes
Based on the reviewers' reports, one of the following recommendations will be issued:
-
Accept without revisions.
-
Accept subject to minor or major revisions.
-
Reject the manuscript.
d) Final editorial decision
If the reviewers' recommendations differ substantially, the Editor may request an evaluation from a third reviewer. The Editorial Committee considers all reviewers' reports and makes the final decision regarding publication. All editorial decisions are final.
The peer review process normally takes 30 to 60 days from the date of manuscript submission. The average time between submission and publication is 4 to 5 months, depending on the journal's editorial workflow and the volume of manuscripts received.
The journal's rejection rate was 67% in 2019.
8. 7. Editorial and Peer Review Process
Upon submission, all manuscripts undergo an initial evaluation by the Editorial Board and the Editorial Committee. The editorial assessment determines whether the manuscript falls within the journal's scope, complies with the Guidelines for Authors, and meets the journal's general standards for publication.
Manuscripts that successfully complete the initial screening proceed to double-anonymous peer review by two independent reviewers with recognized expertise in the relevant field. In this review system, neither the authors nor the reviewers know each other's identities. Reviewers are external to both the publishing institution and the Editorial Committee.
Reviewers evaluate manuscripts according to their scientific quality, originality, contribution to the field, methodological rigor, coherence between the research objectives, theoretical framework, empirical evidence, analysis, and conclusions, as well as their overall clarity and compliance with the journal's editorial standards.
Based on the reviewers' reports, one of the following recommendations will be issued:
-
Accept the manuscript.
-
Accept subject to minor or major revisions.
-
Reject the manuscript.
If the reviewers' recommendations differ substantially, the Editor and the Editorial Committee may request an additional evaluation from a third independent reviewer.
The Editorial Committee considers all reviewers' reports and is responsible for making the final decision regarding publication. All editorial decisions are final.
The average time between submission and publication is 4 to 8 months, depending on the journal's editorial workflow and the volume of manuscripts received.
9. Praxis Educativa accepts and promotes the use of inclusive and unbiased language, respecting gender, age, disability, racial and ethnic identity, sexual orientation, and intersectionality. Authors are encouraged to consult the APA Style Guidelines, particularly the chapter on Bias-Free Language: https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/bias-free-language/. In addition, in 2020, the Guide of Recommendations for the Use of Non-Sexist Language at UNLPam was approved. It can be consulted at: http://www.unlpam.edu.ar/la-unlpam/uso-del-lenguaje-no-sexista.
We strongly advise against using characters such as “@” or “x” for this purpose, as they may hinder access to texts for people with visual impairments. If different forms of non-sexist language are used interchangeably, this choice should be explained and justified in a corresponding endnote.
10. Articles should be presented in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 2.54 cm margins and a 1.27 cm first-line indent for paragraphs. Underlining and numbering in subheadings are not permitted. We use the seventh edition of the APA Style as our primary style guide. Therefore, the heading hierarchy should follow these guidelines: the article title should be centered and bold; Level 2 headings should be left-aligned and bold; Level 3 headings should be left-aligned, bold, and italicized; and so on.
11. Direct quotations of 40 words or fewer should be enclosed in quotation marks within the paragraph and accompanied by the corresponding reference: “Perhaps an absence will always burn over my remains” (Segovia, 2015, p. 11).
Quotations exceeding 40 words should be presented in a separate paragraph, indented 1.27 cm, double-spaced, with a blank line separating them from the preceding and following paragraphs. The corresponding reference should be placed after the period at the end of the quotation. In this case, no additional period should be placed after the closing parenthesis.
Quotations should not be italicized unless the original text is italicized. Quotation marks should only be used for direct quotations of fewer than 40 words.
Secondary citations are permitted only when the original source cannot be retrieved. In such cases, the phrase “cited in” should be used.
Bibliographic references should be included within the text. References to cited works should be provided in the body of the text, indicating the author's last name and year of publication and, when applicable, the page number. Page numbers should always be included for direct quotations: (Freire, 1965) or (Freire, 1965, p. 17), respectively. When citing a source without page numbers, “n.p.” or the paragraph number should be provided.
When citing a work by three or more authors, the first author's last name should be followed by et al.: (Johnson et al., 2010, p. 26).
To indicate an omission in a quotation, use three dots within parentheses (...). To indicate an addition or comment within a quotation, use square brackets.
The full bibliographic information should appear only in the reference list, which is the final section of the article, and not in the endnotes, as required by APA Style.
12. Endnotes should be placed at the end of the article, before the reference list. They should be single-spaced and formatted in Times New Roman, 10-point font. Endnotes must be created using the automatic insertion tool in the word processor rather than manually. In Microsoft Word, go to the “References” tab and select “Insert Endnote.”
According to the journal's guidelines, endnotes should not contain bibliographic references. References to sources may be included in endnotes in the following form:
For more on this concept, see Ludmer (2010).
13. Recommendations
Italics should be used to emphasize a word or introduce a concept. However, italics should not be combined with quotation marks, as this is redundant. Quotation marks should also be used when words or expressions appear in a language other than the language of the article. The use of boldface is not recommended, as it is generally unnecessary in the body of the text. Single quotation marks should be avoided unless they appear within double quotation marks.
Tables and figures should also follow the aforementioned guidelines. The figure number should be written in boldface, followed by the title in italics and without boldface, placed directly below the number and before the figure itself. The source should be indicated below the figure or table, unless it is the author's own work.
The hyphen and the em dash are not the same punctuation mark. The hyphen (-) is used, for example, in compound words such as “political-social.” The em dash (—), which is longer than the hyphen, is used to enclose clarifications or parenthetical remarks. The closing em dash should not be omitted, even when a period or another punctuation mark follows it.
Titles and professional positions should always be written in lowercase: doctor, general, graduate, etc. Nouns designating ecclesiastical positions or titles of nobility should also be written in lowercase: bishop, pope, president. The names of scientific disciplines and fields of knowledge should likewise be written in lowercase: “he does very well in mathematics”; “in the field of literature, there are...”. They should be capitalized only when referring to the name of a subject or degree program: “I studied for a degree in Modern Languages”; “it is for the Biology class.”
Please avoid redundant expressions such as “time lapse,” “on Mondays,” or “in the year 2025,” as well as filler words and colloquial expressions that are not appropriate for the journal's academic style. Sentences and paragraphs should be of moderate length to avoid ambiguity.
The first time a term appears, it should be written out in full, followed by the corresponding acronym in parentheses: “United Nations (UN).” The acronym may be used on subsequent occasions. Abbreviations should be used only when necessary.
We advise against using the expression “and/or,” as it is a translation of the English “and/or” and is generally unnecessary in Spanish, where “or” can already convey both addition and alternative meanings. Its use is acceptable only in technical contexts where it is necessary to avoid ambiguity.
The adjective “mismo/a” should not be used as a pronoun. It does not perform a deictic or anaphoric function and, therefore, this usage is considered inappropriate. For example, avoid constructions such as: “15 texts were published, all of them were in charge of...”. The word “mismo” should be used to express identity, as in “all these books are by the same author,” or for emphasis, as in “the readers themselves are unaware of it.”
14. The reference list should be arranged in alphabetical order and formatted in Times New Roman, 10-point font, single-spaced, with a 1.27 cm hanging indent (not to be confused with a first-line indent). The seventh edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA Style) should be followed. The place of publication should no longer be included; authors' names should not be abbreviated. The expression “et al.” and other similar phrases should not be used in the reference list, except when a work has more than 20 authors. When a DOI is provided, it should be presented in URL format: https://doi.org/. The phrase “Retrieved from” should only be used when a retrieval date is required. Among other considerations, only sources cited in the article should be included in the reference list.
Finally, bibliographic reference management software (Zotero, EndNote, etc.) should not be used. References must be entered manually, as it may be necessary to make corrections during the editorial process.
