Abstract

“Water is worth more than lithium”. Given the recent events related to the constitutional reform in the province of Jujuy, the message of the winning photo of the Población y Sociedad photo contest is alarmingly pertinent. In June 2023, opposition to lithium mining and protests against the state erupted with the reform of the provincial constitution. However, this resistance does not materialize in all native communities. In the Salar de Olaroz-Cauchari, that same month a second lithium mine started to enter the phase of commercial production without protests from the local population. In this note I thus give an account of the reasons for the conflict, framing the protest of the communities of Salinas Grandes-Laguna Guayatayoc historically.
